Providing Vestibular Stimulation to Children Print

Vestibular Stimulation- Swinging and doing Transfers

Goals:
To provide sensory stimulation (vestibular) thru movement.
To improve tone (extensor tone) and strength in upper body.
To improve upper body coordination.

Instructions:
1. Introduce the activity by allowing the child to familiarize him/herself with the swing.  Allow the child to touch the swing, push it and sit on it.  If the child shows no aversion to movement and appears to be comfortable, then introducing linear movements while in prone may be feasible.
2. Position the child in prone on vestibular swing.  Introduce slow linear motions if the child has no aversion.  Integrate a fine motor or visual motor activity.  Make sure that the child knows that the therapist or caregiver is near and is ready to give the child support.  The therapist may also initially push the direction of the swing or hold the child’s lower body for assurance.
3. Allow the child to put weight on both arms and hands for additional proprioceptive inputs.  As the child does transfers, shape sorter or activity, he/she is also gaining stability on the shoulders.  At the same time, bilateral integration and visual motor skills are being addressed.
4. Allow the child to propel the swing as well.  This will develop upper body control and bilateral coordination.
5. Encourage reaching- this will stimulate extensor muscles and enhance upper shoulder stability.
6. Encourage use of both hands. Alternating use while doing the shape sorter in this illustration allows development of both hands.
7. Provide prompts, information talk, and descriptive concepts while the child does the activity to give cognitive stimulation. Pay attention to how the child grasps the objects and correct them as necessary.

Precautions:
Pay attention to the child’s responses to the speed and direction of the swinging.  Make sure that the child is not nauseous, dizzy or manifesting nystagmus.  Start with linear and slow movements. Watch for reactions- whether aversive or lack of responsiveness.
